While we all understand the benefits of forming routines, we still ignore the idea of forming strict daily routines. Routines can help you save time, prioritize, be productive and reduce stress. Besides making you disciplined. The major challenge does not lie in crafting a routine but in implementing it. Here are a few steps that will help you craft your own efficient routine and also prepare yourself to follow them diligently.
Pen down all your activities that you regularly need to do every day. This is not equivalent to a to-do list but also involves one. Ask yourself what you need to do every day. Include the activities that you do every day and also, the ones you are supposed to do. You can start from waking up early, working out, start writing 200 words every day etc. Include activities that you love to do such that your routine will become joyous.
This is the most important part in crafting a routine. Write down the activities that take a lot of time from you and you would be better off without doing them. This is the step where you instruct yourself to say no to certain things like taking a walk with a talkative coworker or a client who does not add value to your business. This will give you a lot of spare time to be used in productive activities.
Every task cannot be # 1. You need to rank and prioritize tasks based on the benefits they give you and the estimated effort. You can also categorize based on urgency, value, and flexibility. Once you have done these categorizations, you will now know which is most important to include every day and which is more flexible that it can be overlooked during unexpected time shortage.
Allocate the time limit for all the tasks that you have selected. The most important and highly beneficial task must be scheduled when you are more active. Think about when to do your best work. For example, mornings are when you are full of energy and the energy depletes in the later part of the day. Reserve this time for doing all the critical thinking and troubleshooting and keep the rest of the day for easier tasks.
Once you have made the routine and scheduled it, test drive for a month. Be strict to yourself, do not compromise and follow every routine diligently day after day. At the end of the month, look at your progress. Make few changes here and there to fit into the system. Make sure to maintain a logbook to track your progress. If you have done it for a month, you become sticky to the routine.
Though routines are good, every day might not be the same. Life does not work on schedules, but you can always give your day a proper structure. Be flexible with a few routines and strictly follow the important ones.
