How to Develop Right Attitude for Great Altitude

Henry Ford said, “If you think you can do a thing, or you think you can't do a thing, you're always right.” According to a Stanford Research Institute study, the path to success is made of 88% attitude and only 12% education. What was the first thought that entered your mind when you read the above statement? Did you think,“Wow! 88% is attitude?! That’s huge. Now, what’s my attitude towards things?” or something along those lines? If you did, you have the right attitude. You show all the makings of a successful person, set to attain very high altitude in life. If your thoughts were on the lines of “Education contributes only 12% to success? Then why bother with it?” you’re, well, the kind of person who perhaps needs to work on your attitude!!

The Good News…

The good news is that attitude can be learned. And an existing attitude can be altered. Attitude is developed from one’s own personal experiences throughout life. By the time one is an independent, free thinking adult, one has formed several different attitudes, some negative, some indifferent, and some positive. However, it is important to recognise a negative attitude right away.It hampers success and becomes an obstacle in our climb to aspirational heights.

A Little Exercise...

Focus your attention on an item or issue and allow yourself to think about negative thoughts surrounding it. Then turn these thoughts into positive ones. Think of the good that can be achieved because of that negative thought.

Recognise, Unlearn and Relearn

Yes. That’s all that you need to do. As soon as your mature mind accepts that your attitude towards a person, issue or episode is not right, you’ve recognised it. Bravo! Now all you need to do is unlearn and relearn.

As futurist and philosopher, Alvin Toffler once wrote: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

Here’s how...

Step 1: Recognise the attitude that needs to change.

Step 2: Decide what needs to replace it.

Step 3: Decide to work on the changed attitude with conviction.

Step 4: Set clear, realistic goals.

Step 5: Make clear action plans to help you achieve those goals.

Step 6: Reward yourself on small attitude changes you achieve.

And do try these to keep your attitude positive and upbeat:

1. Have clarity on the outcome of your actions

Before you take any action, decide how it will serve your greater goals. If it won’t, take that action off your list. Aimless activity wastes time and energy.

2. Do that extra little on a daily basis

Doing the same old, same-old is depressing, even if your same-old has been successful in the past. Success is like athletics; if you don't stretch yourself every day, you gradually become slow and stiff.

3. Be patient – don’t expect miracles!

While you naturally must make decisions and take action based upon the results you'd like to achieve, it's a big mistake to expect those results and then be disappointed when you don't get them.

4. Learn from your mistakes.

Rather than feeling bad if you fail or get rejected, look back at your actions and see what you can do (if anything) to improve. Remember: the results you receive are the signposts for the results you want to achieve.

5. Seek out those who share your positive attitude.

You should surround yourself with positive thinkers and shun those who are excessively negative.

6. Learn to laugh at yourself.

If you want to be happier and make those around you feel more comfortable, cultivate the ability to laugh at yourself. If you don't (or can't) laugh at yourself, the people you work with must be laughing behind your back!

Remember your attitude results in you behaving or acting in a particular way. And this behaviour or action can have an impact on results, outcomes and your climb to that height you want to attain.
