Authors are considered experts, who can attract media attention, dazzle clients and prospects, create opportunities for speaking engagements, and so much more. One of the quickest ways to obtain instant credibility is to author a book. Offer people inside -- or outside -- of your industry whatever they need to know. Give helpful advice. Teach someone how to do something. You could write a book that could fall under the categories of self-help, how-to, biography, informational or reference.

Get Heard…

Try and get invited as a speaker at seminars and conferences. There’s nothing like the captive audience you can have as a speaker. Reach out to local trade organizations, schools, networking groups, and other places where you can locate your target audience. Become a member of the leading associations and organizations related to your industry. Then go deeper by joining the board of directors, volunteering, speaking or sponsoring various events. You’ll engage with other notables from whom you can learn, and you’ll establish yourself in a leadership position. Step forward when you have suggestions or ideas. Get featured on radio and television talk shows. You can find programs on every imaginable topic.

Get Published…

Look for opportunities to author articles about your industry. Share your opinions and gain exposure with a wide audience. Provide articles or news items for organization or association newsletters or publications, pitch focused article ideas to your industry’s trade magazines, and scan the news for topics to which you can add information as an industry expert. Editors are always looking for interesting and informative content, so step forward and offer your expertise. Blogs are also a wonderful way to connect with your audience, increase traffic to your website, and establish yourself as an expert.

Get Seen…

Visit as many groups as possible that spark your interest. Hold volunteer positions in organizations. Ask open-ended questions in networking conversations. This form of questioning opens up the discussion and shows listeners that you are interested in them. Be able to articulate what you are looking for and how others may help you. Follow through quickly and efficiently on referrals you are given.

Get Followed Online…

Create an online presence. Whether you focus on just one network—such as Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn—or you spend time on all of them, you have an incredible opportunity to reach an audience. Share links to your blog posts, news, quick tips, opinions, and questions. Let your followers know you’re paying attention and that you appreciate them. The information you use doesn’t always have to be your own. For example, you can interview leading experts or thought leaders in your own podcast series or post guest blogs that reach your subject’s own followers. Think of what you know that can benefit other people, and then develop ways to disseminate that information through all the technologies and methods available today.

Go ahead. If you are an expert, let people know. Establish yourself as the expert you are…
